Scottish census: Households warned to fill out census or face £1000 fine

All Edinburgh households are warned they face a £1000 fine if they don’t fill out their census form.

The official document offers a nationwide once-a-decade count of the population in Edinburgh and the rest of Scotland.

The forms were released recently and punters in Edinburgh have until May to complete it and send it away.

The Scottish Sun report that every household has been given a letter with instructions on how to complete the form.

The government and other services rely on data collected from the census to make decisions.

But Scots could face a huge fine if it’s not completed by May 1.

Here is all you need to know about the 2022 census.

How to take part?

Every household in the country should have been given a letter on February 28 with instructions of how to take part.

Census Day is today, and Scots have until May 1 to complete and send it back.

To fill out the questionnaire online go to the completion website and follow the instructions on the census letter.

If you have lost the letter then you can order a replacement.

And you can order a paper questionnaire online if you prefer.

What is the census used for?

The information gathered from the census helps public services and spending decisions.

It helps with information like locations of GP surgeries and unemployment programmes.

What does it ask?

It asks a range of topics from the type of accommodation people stay in, relationships, age, sex, employment status and health.

Census questions are split into two - household and individual.

Household questions ask about your home and who is living/staying there.

And individual questions ask about the people living in your household which includes babies and children.

What happens if I don’t complete it?

If you don’t fill out the form then a census officer will contact you and urge to complete it.

If you don’t return a completed census, you will be committing a crime.

If you are prosecuted, then you may have to pay a fine of up to £1,000 plus court costs.
