Former BBC Radio 2 DJ Scott Mills was fired after bosses discovered the alleged victim in the police investigation was under the age of 16, it has been reported.
Current management are said to have become aware of the new details in recent weeks and took the decision to terminate the presenter's contract, according BBC News. The BBC declined to comment on the report.
Mills broke his silence on Wednesday, saying he had been subject to “rumour and speculation” since it was announced earlier this week he was fired over “allegations about his personal conduct”.
It later emerged he was investigated by police in 2016 over claims of “serious sexual offences” against a teenage boy under 16 between 1997 and 2000. The case was closed in 2019 after officers deemed there was insufficient evidence to bring charges.
In a statement released through his lawyer, Mills said he “fully cooperated” with a 2016 police investigation relating to “an allegation of a historical sexual offence”.
“In response to this the Metropolitan Police has made a statement, which I confirm relates to me. An allegation was made against me in 2016 of a historic sexual offence which was the subject of a police investigation in which I fully cooperated and responded to in 2018,” he said.

Comment: The Scott Mills scandal shows exactly why we need more Liza Tarbucks
11:46 , Tara CobhamIwas moved and gripped by the recent departure of much-loved BBC weather stalwart, Carol Kirkwood, 63, and the montage that accompanied it. The news that she was retiring to spend more time with her husband sparked an outpouring of love for the stalwart broadcaster, and her tears at being torn over spending time with her family and leaving a job that she had “loved every minute of” will have chimed with many.
See too presenter Liza Tarbuck, who recently stepped down from her show on BBC Radio 2 because she wants to “get her weekends back”. After more than a decade in her Saturday evening broadcasting slot, she said she wanted more personal time rather than being tied to the regular schedule. In the handwritten note, posted on Instagram, she wrote:
“I think you’ve guessed, some fool left a door open & I sneaked out – a French exit! Together we made 2 hours of radio feel like a private member’s club, that’s the stuff of dreams, thousands of people enjoying each others company like great friends. Imagine what else we could do.

BBC admits knowing about police investigation into Mills almost a decade ago
09:39 , Tara CobhamThe BBC knew about a police investigation into DJ Scott Mills in 2017 but obtained “new information” in the weeks prior to his sacking and “acted decisively”, the corporation said.
In a statement, a BBC spokesperson said: “Scott Mills had a long career across the BBC, he was hugely popular and we know the news this week has come as a shock and surprise to many.
“We also recognise there’s been much speculation in the media and online since Monday. We hope people understand that there is a limit to what we can say because we have to be mindful of the rights of those involved.
“What we can confirm is that in recent weeks, we obtained new information relating to Scott and we spoke directly with him. As a result, the BBC acted decisively in line with our culture and values and terminated his contracts on Friday 27 March.
“The BBC has made a significant commitment to improve its culture, processes and standards. Last year, following an independent culture review, we set out the behavioural expectations for everyone who works with or for the BBC and we were clear action would be taken if these were not met.
“Separately, we can confirm the BBC was made aware in 2017 of the existence of an ongoing police investigation, which was subsequently closed in 2019 with no arrest or charge being made. We are doing more work to understand the detail of what was known by the BBC at this time.”
Scott Mills' first statement since BBC sacking in full
09:09 , Tara CobhamAfter the BBC announced his sacking earlier this week, Scott Mills said: “The recent announcement that I am no longer contracted to the BBC has led to the publication of rumour and speculation. In response to this the Metropolitan Police has made a statement, which I confirm relates to me.
“An allegation was made against me in 2016 of a historic sexual offence which was the subject of a police investigation in which I fully co-operated and responded to in 2018.
“As the police have stated, a file of evidence was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service, which determined that the evidential threshold had not been met to bring charges.
“Since the investigation related to an allegation that dates back nearly 30 years and the police investigation was closed seven years ago, I hope that the public and the media will understand and respect my wish not to make any further public comment on this matter.
“I wish to thank from the bottom of my heart all those who have reached out to me with kindness, my former colleagues, and my beloved listeners, who I greatly miss.”

08:24 , Holly EvansFinal day as BBC director-general for Tim Davie
07:50 , Holly EvansOutgoing BBC director-general Tim Davie will step down from his post on Thursday after the broadcaster faced several controversies in recent years.
Mr Davie will be replaced by interim director-general, Rhodri Talfan Davies, on April 2, before former Google boss Matt Brittin becomes permanent director-general on May 18.
Mr Davie succeeded Lord Tony Hall as director-general in September 2020 during a turbulent time for the broadcaster following a row about the licence fee, issues around gender pay and increased competition from streaming services.
During his tenure, the corporation has faced a number of controversies, most notably on its editorial coverage which has led to a 10 billion dollar lawsuit from US President Donald Trump over the editing of a Panorama documentary which prompted the former’s resignation in November.
His time as the head of the corporation also saw one of the BBC’s highest paid newsreaders, Huw Edwards, plead guilty to making indecent images of children and admit to having 41 photographs on WhatsApp, including seven of the most serious type.
Mr Davie signs off days after Radio 2 breakfast host ScottMills had his contract with the broadcaster terminated after allegations about his “personal conduct”.

Mills was questioned under caution by officers in July 2018 and The Sun has reported Mills denied the claims at the time and informed the BBC.
The newspaper said BBC bosses decided not to take the then Radio 1 presenter off air at the time and the case was later dropped in May 2019 due to lack of evidence.
Hampshire Police say the sexual offences allegations were first reported by a third party in 2016 and that the force logged the details and passed on information to the Met for investigation.
The Met, which does not identify people under investigation pre-charge, said it closed its investigation in May 2019 following advice from the Crown Prosecution Service that “the evidential threshold had not been met to bring charges”.

Clara Amfo tipped as potential replacement for Mills
Wednesday 1 April 2026 05:00 , Holly EvansClara Amfo, 41, has been a fixture of British TV and radio over the past decade-plus, having joined BBC Radio 1Xtra in 2013, as host of the weekend breakfast show. In 2015, she succeeded Fearne Cotton as host of the BBC Radio 1 mid-morning show.
She is also known for hosting Radio 1’s Future Sounds series between 2021 and 2024, having taken over the role from Annie Mac.
The big reasons Amfo is being considered a contender are that she is familiar with the BBC, a well-known household name, and is currently available.
Addressing her decision to leave BBC Radio 1, Amfo said last year that she had felt “completely satiated” by the job and wanted to avoid it becoming a “chore”. On television, Amfo is known for presenting at the Brit Awards, Top of the Pops and The One Show.
