Scott McTominay is set to undergo surgery to correct a heart condition.
The Napoli star will have corrective surgery following the onset of a mild benign arrhythmia, which involves irregular heart rhythms.
According to the British Heart Foundation, an ablation course of treatment "uses heat or cold energy to create tiny scars in the heart. The scars block faulty heart signals and restore a typical heartbeat".
The Serie A club released a statement on Tuesday announcing the planned surgery for McTominay.
McTominay looks set not to be involved with Scotland during the upcoming international break due to the health matter.
Scotland are set to play Slovenia, Switzerland and North Macedonia in the Nations League between late September and early October.
But it appears new manager Sebastien Pocognoli will not have McTominay available for selection after the surgery announcement.
Napoli have confirmed the player will not be back available for club action until after the international break.
A Napoli statement confirmed: "Following the onset of a mild benign arrhythmia, Scott McTominay will undergo corrective surgery using a cardiac arrhythmia ablation (PFA) in the coming days.
"He will be available again after the international break."
