Scott Carson names Liverpool team-mate he tried to donate Champions League medal to

Scott Carson made his Liverpool debut on this day in 2005.

He went on to win the Champions League with Liverpool in the same campaign but attempted to donate his winners medal to fellow goalkeeper Chris Kirkland.

Here he explains why....

Scott Carson has revealed that he tried to give away his 2005 Champions League winners' medal he won with Liverpool.

The goalkeeper was on the bench on May 25 2005 when the Reds beat AC Milan on penalties, and played his part in a 2-1 win at home to Juventus in the quarter-finals.

The then 19-year-old was playing just his third game for the Reds when Rafa Benitez's side beat the Italian giants at Anfield in April 2005, and his appearance on the substitutes' bench in Istanbul ensured he received a medal after the game.

However, Carson has revealed that he wanted to donate his medal to teammate Chris Kirkland, who played more during the group stages.

“When we got the medals, I tried to give mine to Chris," Carson told The Guardian.

"He played more games in the group stages than me. So I felt that he deserved it more.

“But Chris, as anyone who knows him will say, is a really nice lad and he said: ‘No. You were on the bench, you played your part as well.’

"I’m delighted I’ve got it, but a medal is a lot more valuable to you if you played. For me, Just to witness that night was good enough.”

Signed from Leeds as a teenager in January 2005, Carson left Anfield for West Brom in 2008 after three spells out on loan with Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton Athletic and Aston Villa.
