Neil Lennon reckons Scott Brown has the ambition – and potential – to be a future Celtic boss as he says he’s been hugely impressed how well the Hoops hero as adapted to management.
The trophy-laden former Celtic captain took over Fleetwood Town last summer to cut his teeth as a head coach with former Hibs mate and Rangers rival Steven Whittaker as his assistant and led them to a respectable 13th place finish in League One. Two-time Celtic boss Lennon says he’s not surprised how well he has done and reckons he has the drive to go to the very top.
Speaking to www.safebettingsites.com Lennon said: “I heard some chatter about Scott going back to Celtic to work with Brendan Rodgers but he’s definitely better off being his own man. When you’re a young coach you’re never quite sure when you’re ready. The opportunity came for him, he took it and he’s handled it really well.
"He’s a leader and I think he’s enjoying being in charge. What he’s trying to do is work his way up the food chain of football and he has made a very good start. I’m sure he would love to be Celtic manager one day – and why not? He was a great player at the club and he’s very well thought of around the club and within it. That might be a target for him. I haven’t really spoken with him about that but knowing him he will want to achieve as much as he can as a manager.
“I have been very impressed with what Scott has done at Fleetwood. It’s a big jump to go straight into League One – especially as he never played in England so he won’t have known the division that well. He’s definitely improved Fleetwood and he had a good cup run too. They were never in any danger of dropping into relegation area – somewhere they had been in the previous couple of seasons.”
Brown finished a place above former Parkhead team-mate Gary Caldwell who took over Exeter City last autumn. Lennon has high hopes for him too.
He said: “Gary came in mid-season and had a solid start. Exeter are a good club and I’m sure he will want to kick on again. He feels he has some points to prove up here as things didn’t go so well for him in Scotland with Partick Thistle and the Hibs as Shaun Maloney’s assistant. He will be targeting top 10 for sure and maybe even top six.”
