SCOTT ARFIELD has set his sights on Premier Sports Cup success this season after firing Rangers into the quarter-finals with victory over Queen of the South.
And the Ibrox midfielder knows Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side must rise to the occasion against Celtic as they attempt to kick-start their Premiership title bid this weekend.
Arfield netted either side of the interval as he followed up a debut strike from Robbie Ure and a Lee Connelly equaliser to secure a 3-1 victory at Ibrox.
It was a straightforward outing for a mix-and-match Rangers as they warmed up for the first Old Firm clash of the campaign.
And Arfield is determined to keep the momentum building as Van Bronckhorst sets his sights on domestic silverware in the coming months.
"That’s exactly what it was," Arfield said when asked if it was a case of job done against the Doonhamers. "The majority of the first half we were good. The performance levels were there.
“But second half we were poor. We let the game slow down and it suited them.
“We always felt we were going to go on and win it but we wanted to entertain the fans and we did that for the majority of the first half. The majority of the second wasn’t good enough.
“We managed to get the third goal and kill the game but we should have been better in the second half.
“Definitely [we want to win the League Cup]. There’s always expectation at this football club and always a pursuit of success and this cup is no different.
“This is the first one you can win in the calendar year. We had a bad result against Hibs last season and we want to put it right. We want to get our hands on every trophy we’re in.
“It’s a big one [against Celtic]. It’s the next one so it’s always the biggest when you play for a club this size.
“The expectation is on us. The club is build on success, when you pull that badge on you have to deliver for it.
“Obviously the magnitude of this weekend’s game speaks for itself but there’s only three points up for grabs. But like every game we go into we feel we can win them.”
