JOURNALISTS working at The Scotsman and Edinburgh Evening News were among those to take industrial action on Monday in a row over pay.
More than 330 journalists across the UK employed by National World, who own the two Scottish titles, also took industrial action.
The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) has said that National World imposed a below-inflation 4.5% pay increase and “has failed to adequately consider the financial hardship experienced by some staff on low wages”.
More strike dates are still to come on Friday and Monday.
The union has urged National World’s management to return to negotiations with an improved offer to settle the dispute.
A post on social media showed former Scottish labour leader Richard Leonard and Scottish Labour MSP Daniel Johnson both joining the picket line in the capital.
Journalists will now continue to work to rule until the next strike, meaning they will only work within their contracted hours.
In a post on social media, the NUJ said: “Superb turn out of @NUJOfficial members at The Scotsman and other National World titles on their first day of strike action over pay today.
“We will be posting more from all of those who took part in the days to come. To all who took part – we appreciate your solidarity in standing up for quality journalism and fair pay.”
