Scots whitewater paddler dies in tragic Norway kayaking accident aged 20

A world-renowned Scottish kayaker has died in Norway in a tragic accident aged just 20.

Robert Eggleston, from Perth, passed away in hospital on August 3. He had been kayaking on a river in Norway where he had spent the summer.

Tributes have poured in from across the world for the top white water paddler who has been described as an "unbelievable athlete". The young lad was also known for his "positive attitude and infectious smile".

Robert represented Waka Kayaks and. was named U21 Male Paddler of the Year 2021 in December and was thought to have a bright future in the sport.

He grew up next to the River Tay and despite being young in years had some of the most formidable international white water destinations.

In 2021, he took on the Rondu Gorge of the Indus, the Zambezi in Africa, first descents and laps of classics in Norway, high waters in Wales and Scotland, and through Chile.

He also had an impressive social media following on Instagram, sharing his daring paddling exploits from scenic landscapes from across the world.

Waka Kayaks described him as "talented beyond his years". They said: "Robert Eggleston lost his life a few days ago doing what he loved. We have been so grateful to have Robert in our Waka team.

"An incredibly talented paddler, never lacking in adventurous spirit, highly respected and living life to its fullest. You will be hugely missed by so many. Aroha nui. Rest In Peace."

The Scottish Whitewater community have set up a memorial spot for Robert on the banks of the River Tummel with a model kayak. People can record their lap times and leave a message to Robert in a book.

The UK's Flow Kayaks added: "Robert quickly became the face of Scottish whitewater and recognised globally by the Paddlesport community, he will never be forgotten.

"He really was setting the bar for style and control, unlike anyone I’d seen before and I could’ve watched him paddle and progress for a lifetime."

The Scottish Canoe Association said: "World renowned young Scottish white water paddler, Robert Eggleston, has died in a Norwegian hospital following a terrible kayaking accident on Wednesday 3rd August. Heartfelt condolences go out to Gary, Heather, Katie and all the family on their tragic loss.

"Robert will be so sadly missed by his family, friends and the Scottish and worldwide paddling community."
