Scots student recalls drunkenly telling future wife he 'loved her' the first time they met

They say love at first sight exists.

Well one Dundee student took this to the extreme at the end of a drunken night out by proclaiming his love for his future wife - just hours after they met.

Vivek Manthri, 27, met Katie, 25, while at University in Dundee in 2015 in a bar in the city. Viv was out with the University hockey club and had one too many pints.

He offered to buy Katie a drink, she asked for a rum and coke, he took her to the bar and ordered 20 jaegerbombs instead.

It wasn't the greatest first meeting but he didn't want to let that be Katie's only impression of him so by the end of the night he was wandering around the club asking everyone - Katie included - if they had seen a 'short blonde girl' as he needed to tell her he loved her.

Thankfully Katie saw through the drunken declaration of love, and after a hungover apology, decided to meet and have a proper first date.

The rest as they say is history, because the couple married last year in a beautiful ceremony despite many changes due to covid.

The couple romantically got engaged while snorkelling in the Maldives, in the middle of the Indian Ocean. However, just like their first meeting, not everything went to plan.

Katie told the Daily Record: "The proposal was meant to be on the beach at sunset, but our morning snorkelling tour was postponed to the afternoon as the guide had one too many the night before.

"Adapting to changing circumstances, Viv decided to propose whilst paddle boarding in the bay by our hotel. He hid the ring in his wallet.

"Once we were out a good bit into the water, Viv began by saying some romantic things, whilst struggling to remove his wallet from a trunk’s pocket sealed by saltwater.

"Viv simultaneously was trying to get me to stop paddling away without giving the game away. Thankfully the ring didn’t slip into the sea once it was finally revealed.

"It was a complete surprise, so much so I didn't actually say anything, but just took the ring, put it on, made a beeline for the shore and told every person we passed that we’d just gotten engaged."

Despite Covid rules changing frequently throughout the year of planning their wedding, the couple had the most amazing day on June 30, 2021 at Doxford Barns in the North of England.

Many of their guests hadn’t seen each other in a long time so the wedding became a celebration of togetherness, on top of being about Viv and Katie’s love for one another.

The couple have shared some top tips for anyone planning their wedding ahead of this weekend's Scottish Wedding Show, which returns to Glasgow's SEC.

Katie said: "Go with whatever makes you happy, you want to just have a blast on your wedding day.

"Our focus was fun for everyone, but also about showcasing who we are as people and as a couple. We stuck in a few quirks in our ceremony, like a Whisky and Wisdom box, and a Quaich ceremony using Indian whisky."

The Scottish Wedding Show returns to the SEC, Glasgow from 19-20 February 2022, bringing together more than 200 of Scotland’s top suppliers to give happy couples inspiration for their big day.
