Scots school roof blown off as storm Otto wreaks havoc across country

The roof of a Scot school was blown off as high winds from Storm Otto battered the country

Burnside Primary School in Carnoustie suffered serious damage to its titanium roof during strong winds in the early hours of Friday.

Angus Council shared a picture to Facebook showing the extent of the damage, which showed the roof almost fully ripped off on one side of the building.

The local authority also confirmed that an initial assessment was carried earlier today that deemed the building unsafe for children and staff to attend.

Pupils and staff are currently off on mid-term break, however the school will remain closed next week and pupils will be provided with remote learning commencing on Wednesday 22 February.

Burnside Nursery will also be temporarily relocated to Carnoustie Early Learning and Childcare Centre from Tuesday 21 February.

The council added that there is currently no confirmed date on the school building reopening, however families and staff will be provided with updates when they are available in the coming days.

Posting to Facebook, the local authority wrote: "Burnside Primary School in Carnoustie suffered serious damage to its roof in the early hours of Friday 17 February 2023 as a result of Storm Otto.

An initial assessment has been carried out and confirms that the building is not safe for children and staff to attend in its current condition.

Following the mid-term break, the school building will remain closed to all children in the school week beginning Tuesday 21 February 2023.

At present, there is not a confirmed timescale for reopening the school building. Assessments are continuing and updates will be provided when they are available in the coming days."

Storm Otto wreaked havoc across the country today, with several other properties damaged and a number of roads blocked by fallen trees.

Many schools were forced to close and homes were left without power after lines were brought down in the 80mph winds.

Trains and ferries were also cancelled, with a danger of large waves on the North Sea coast “as well as a chance of some damage to buildings and infrastructure”.
