Scots issued urgent warning over fake Universal Credit app and phishing texts

SCOTS have been issued an urgent warning over reports of a fake Universal Credit app targetting people's personal information.

The alert comes from Advice Direct Scotland, a country-wide service which provides free advice and information online.

This comes after a similar scam alert was issued by the organisation for phishing texts aiming to "trick people into sharing their personal information."

Making the scam announcement, Advice Direct Scotland said: "Attention, everyone! We’ve been made aware of a fake Universal Credit app available in app stores, along with phishing texts trying to trick people into sharing their personal information."

Highlighting ways to avoid becoming a victim of this sophisticated scam, the advice service added: "Do not share personal information on any unofficial app or website

"Always verify that a website is official before entering your details. The official government website for Universal Credit is: https://www.gov.uk/sign-in-universal-credit

"Be cautious of unsolicited messages or links, even if they appear to come from a trusted source."

Advice Direct Scotland also called on anyone receiving "suspicious messages" to not engage with them and to report them immediately.

It said: "Stay vigilant! If you receive any suspicious messages, do not engage. Report any scams to consumeradvice.scot at 0808 164 6000 or visit scamwatch.scot."
