A callous heavy metal musician who raped three women has been jailed for eight years for his crimes.
Lewis Brodie, 28, preyed on his victims, who cannot be named for legal reasons, at locations in Dundee between 2010 and 2019. The High Court in Edinburgh heard how Brodie, who sang and played guitar for Scots rockers The Weight of Atlas, preyed on his first victim at a house party in Broughty Ferry.
The court heard that she was just 15-years-old when the attack took place whilst she slept in May 2010. Another attack took place after Brodie’s victim withdrew consent when they were both having sex with one another.
On Tuesday, judge Lord Ericht heard how tattooed Brodie maintained he was innocent of any wrongdoing for the offences which he was convicted of last month.
Telling the heavy rocker that he’d have to spend time in prison, Lord Ericht said: “You have been convicted of three charges of rape. I have taken into account the contents of a criminal justice and social work report and everything which has been said on your behalf by your counsel.
“Your attacks had a profound and detrimental effect on your victims. The offences to which you have been convicted of are such that only a substantial custodial sentence is appropriate in this case.
“Your victims deserve to be commended in coming forward to give evidence against you.”
Brodie was convicted on three charges of rape following a trial earlier this year at the High Court in Dundee. Sentence had been deferred for the court to obtain reports. Brodie, of Monifieth, Angus, had denied his guilt and was remanded in custody by Lord Ericht.
He played in a band called The Weight of Atlas - the group have more than 37,000 monthly listeners on the Spotify streaming service each month. The group has toured the UK , Ireland, Europe and Russia and their videos have been watched thousands of times on Spotify.
At his trial, Brodie wept as he was led from the dock. Members of his family protested their relative’s innocence before court staff asked them to leave.
The trial was closed to the public while each of Brodie’s victims gave their evidence. Jurors heard how Brodie’s second victim was raped in February 2019 at a house in Dundee’s Dens Road.
He started having consensual sex with the woman but she later withdrew her consent. He then repeatedly tried to kiss her before raping her.
The third attack took place in September 2019. Police became aware of Brodie’s attacks and he was brought to justice. On Tuesday, Brodie observed proceedings via video link.
Defence advocate Gordon Jackson KC told Lord Ericht that his client still maintained his innocence. He added: “He has a strong family support network who have been helping him. He is engaged to a partner who is standing by him.”
Mr Jackson told the court that Brodie’s mental health has also suffered.
He added: “His mental health is very bad. He has had to get medication because he’s been living as a virtual recluse.”
Lord Ericht also placed Brodie on the Sex Offenders Register.
