Scots gritter driver says it's 'unrealistic' to expect snow free roads during cold snap

A Scots gritter driver has warned motorists to 'slow down' as weather warnings are issued across parts of the country for snow.

The Met Office issued an amber weather warning for northern Scotland from 3pm this afternoon, January 17. Another yellow weather warning for snow and ice across the country will last until Wednesday, January 18.

This has caused treacherous conditions on the roads but the Bear Scotland driver says their ploughs and gritters are doing everything they can to make the roads safe. After reading people complaining online the man hit out and says they have been working twelve hour shifts through the night for the past three days.

He complained that the public have unrealistic expectations and warned drivers that they also have a role to play in keeping the roads safe during cold snaps.

He said: "Unfortunately the snow has been falling so thick and fast it is unrealistic to expect snow free roads.

"As soon as we plough and grit, the snow just resettles. When the weather is this bad, it is everyone’s responsibility to drive sensibly taking the road conditions into account.

"The driving I have seen over the last few days is truly shocking. It is not the careful, slow drivers causing the problems but the drivers who drive with little regard for the weather and road conditions.

"A road may be black but that doesn’t mean ice hasn’t formed especially with the minus temperatures.

"So please all slow down."

The amber weather alert in the Highlands warns of "danger to life" and begins this afternoon, according to the Met Office.

The alert, which lasts until midnight, warns of black ice and heavy snowfall up to 15cm. Power cuts are likely, meaning services like mobile phone coverage may be affected.

Motorists are advised of possible road delays and cancelation risks for public transport including rail, bus and air, with longer journey times likely.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Paul Gundersen, said: "The Amber National Severe Weather Warning (NSWWS) runs from 3 pm today to midnight as snow showers across the north Highlands become heavy and extend across the Grampians by this evening."
