Scotland has a chance at World Cup glory despite Steve Clarke’s men missing out on a spot in Qatar. Fans will get to see their countrymen kicking a ball at the World Cup as the country’s top FootGolfers head to the US to battle it out against the best on the planet.
The cross between football and golf sees players kicking full-size footballs around golf courses with big holes. Scots have competed in previous FootGolf World Cups, as part of Team UK sides made up of players from Scotland, England and Wales.
But this is the first time Scotland will compete in its own right in the competition. The 10-day event in May features team and individual competitions and takes place in Florida. The FootGolf Association of Scotland has recently been accepted into the Federation for International FootGolf.
Joe McCourt, of Hamilton, finished 12th in the singles event at the 2018 World Cup, in Morocco, while playing for Team UK. Last year, he captained Scotland to victory in the Brainstrust Cup, an event in Fife against England and Wales. And the 34-year-old is relishing the prospect of being the first Scot to captain his country in a World Cup.
He said: “It’s an honour for me to lead Scotland into our first World Cup and something I never thought was possible. The chance to go out to the USA and play against the best the world has to offer is a dream come true.” Joe and fellow Scot David Quigley were part of the 2019 Jansen Cup side at The Celtic Manor Resort in Wales.
