A freezing snowstorm has been predicted to hit Scotland this month as the blizzard conditions have been compared to the monster ‘Beast from the East’.
Forecasters say the rare weather event, known as Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW), could happen soon, bringing a deluge of snow, The Mirror reports.
The same major phenomenon brought 22 inches of snow during 2018's Beast from the East. According to WX Charts, snow maps now show a 1,000km blizzard heading to the UK in days.
In a blog post, the Met Office wrote: "The latest forecasts are showing that a major SSW is now likely to take place. A major SSW often makes the jet stream meander more, which can lead to a large area of blocking high pressure over northern Europe, including the UK [and Ireland].
"This blocking high pressure can lead to cold, dry weather in the north of Europe, including the UK [and Ireland]."
Scotland will see snow making its way from the East, which will also bring heavy rain from Monday, February 20.
Weather producer for Sky News, Chris England, has said that “sudden stratospheric warmings can lead to colder conditions over parts of the Northern Hemisphere through their interaction with the jet stream”.
The weather expert also warned that these high pressure systems, that are formed by feeding cold air down the north and east, are not guaranteed.
It comes after the Met Office had issued a snow and ice weather warning (Wednesday, February 8) predicting an icy blizzard over parts of the country.
