After a white Christmas, Scots will be treated to more snow in the lead up to the new year.
Snow and icy weather will hit parts of the UK in the coming days as a result of a jet stream of frozen air moving in across the Atlantic.
The Met Office reports the deep freeze in the US is helping fuel 'powerful' jet streams headed our way. Forecasters say the UK is in for "unsettled" conditions in the lead up to New Year's Day partly due to the cold air sweeping in from America.
Parts of the US have recently been subjected to dangerous snow storms, particularly in upstate New York. While the extreme weather has resulted in fatalities, the UK will likely not experience these serious conditions.
The fast-flowing current will land in the UK on Thursday, according to the Met Office.
Met Office spokesperson Nancy Nicola Maxey told the Daily Record: "Because of the jet stream, what we are seeing is wet and windy weather, so we're seeing quite a lot of rain for most of the UK as we go through the next few days into the new year."
She continued: "But for the far north and for Scotland, we're going to see some snow over the Scottish mountains, while hill snow will clear through northern Scotland tonight.
"And then tomorrow again, some more snow falling over the hills of northern Scotland, while on Thursday could see one to three centimetres of snowfall on elevated roads above 400m. Finally for Saturday, we are seeing see snowfall across high ground and north of the central belt."
Weather maps from WXCharts indicate a chilly jet stream will result in snowfall in Scotland through to New Year's Day. The wintry weather is shown to fall across the country at different intervals throughout the week.

Wednesday
The Met Office forecast says: "A mild start to the day as snow is not set to fall until this afternoon."
A map from WXCharts shows light snow moving in from the southeast before spreading northwards across the country before settling in the northwest.
Thursday
Thursday's Met Office forecast says: "Colder and windy with sunshine and showers, some heavy in the north and west with a risk of hail and thunder."
WXCharts' snow maps indicate a wider snowfall for Thursday, with it likely to occur as far south as Glasgow and Edinburgh. It will briefly clear up in the early evening before emerging once again over the Northern Isles.
Friday
The Met Office forecast says: "Unsettled with spells of rain, occasionally heavy, pushing across most areas Friday and Saturday. Some snow likely in the north. Further rain in the south Sunday. Colder with showers elsewhere."
The WXCharts map hints that Friday will be a full day of the white stuff, as snow is set to start falling in the early morning. The south will be first hit, spreading from Carlisle up to Edinburgh, before travelling northwards across the country, before falling once again in the north.
Saturday
Forecasters have predicted that the weekend will see similar conditions to those on Friday.
On New Year's Eve, the WXCharts indicates that conditions are set to ease up at the start of the weekend, with snowfall occurring mainly far north, before briefly clearing later on. However, snowfall is to resume once again by the afternoon, before another clear up, then moving southwards by the evening.
Sunday
The WXCharts map on New Year's Day shows a clearer start to New Year's day as parts of the southwest will see a light dusting, while areas affected will shrink to dotted parts of the country.
However, the afternoon will see snow resume once again in the north and northwest and will remain there until later that night.
