Scotland's most 'affordable' city named as part of new study

SCOTLAND’S most “affordable” city has been named as part of a new study.

Researchers with Tax Accountant analysed cost of living factors such as rent and average net salary as part of a new study ranking the most affordable cities across the UK.

While no Scottish city featured in the top 10, Aberdeen was named as Scotland’s most affordable city – coming in 20th place in the UK overall.

Researchers created a combined cost of living score using a salary-to-cost ratio, with both weighed at 50% to ensure affordable living costs and good earning potential are valued equally.

Overall, Aberdeen scored 69.93 with Aberdare in Wales ranked as the UK’s most affordable with a score of 79.89.

The top 10 were as follows:

  1. Aberdare – Wales
  2. Lewes – England
  3. Lichfield – England
  4. Tunbridge Wells – England
  5. Uxbridge – England
  6. Sutton – England
  7. Whitehaven – England
  8. Bridgwater – England
  9. Kingston-upon-Thames – England
  10. Southend-on-Sea – England

Aatif Malik, director of Tax Accountant, said: “Considering the ongoing cost of living crisis, individuals seeking to maximise their disposable income should consider factors beyond salary alone.

“Living costs and expenses for essentials, like rents and utilities, must be taken into consideration.

“Our research shows that there are many cities and towns offering a compelling balance that can greatly enhance quality of life without giving up the comforts of living in or near big cities.”
