Scotland player ratings as Hendry red card leads to long night at Hampden

Scotland players during defeat to Switzerland at Hampden (Image: PA)

Angus Gunn 5

Near enough his first action was picking the ball out of the net after Rodriguez found the side netting with his free-kick. Will inevitably face questions, but the strike was whipped into the corner. Kept the score down as he denied Ndoye with a save low to his right before the interval. And prevented the electric Swiss forward in the second period as he rushed off his line to deflect it clear with a superb stop. Will be frustrated by the third goal, which went through his hands.

Andy Robertson 6

Will be hoping for a better result on what will be his 100th cap at the weekend. Individually can be content with his performance as he was the source of some threatening moments in a match dominated by the visitors. As expected, a power of running throughout down the left flank, extending to pressing well into the Swiss half even after Scotland were reduced to ten. Slipped at the crucial moment in first-half opening as he miscued cross.

Luis Binks 5

Up against a tough test for his debut for Scotland. Wasn't particularly to blame for any of the goals conceded but won't be thrilled with his introduction at Hampden on a poor evening across the board. Regrouped and did as well as he could against the tricky backdrop. Unfair to judge the defender on this showing.

Scott McKenna 4

Tasked with pressing high as the most central of the back three but was caught out too often in the early stages. Drifted into midfield to leave Ndoye in a footrace with Hendry to lead to red card. Didn't command the backline well enough but was up against it when Switzerland took control of the contest, leading to wave after wave of attack with little relief or time to regroup.

Jack Hendry 2

Lasted just ten minutes, two of which were a delay for VAR to work out the placement of the foul and upgrade to a red card. Should have let Ndoye shoot but couldn't resist pulling the forward after being completely done for pace due to the high line. Condemned his team-mates to a long, old night.

Nathan Patterson 5

Showed signs he could seriously suit the new system under Pocognoli as he rampaged forward in the first few minutes to support early attacks. Reduced to carrying out defensive duties shortly after but has the required energy levels and physicality to perform for Pocognoli on a night where Scotland give themselves a chance.

Lewis Ferguson 5

Quickly put himself about with a nudge on Manzambi to show he was game and ready for a war in midfield. But nullified quickly after as Scotland were outnumbered and completely unable to compete to dictate the play. To his credit, didn't stop as he played the full 90 minutes in the deepest position in the midfield.

Billy Gilmour 5

Such a key player for Scotland under Pocognoli and showed a glimpse of his enviable quality with a sumptuous turn on the sideline in the first five minutes. Like many others, his performance inevitably dipped as running replaced quality in possession for Scotland. Replaced on the hour, more than likely with an eye on the weekend.

John McGinn 5

Forced to drop into midfield three after Scotland were reduced in numbers. His attacking threat was curtailed by the change as he adopted a less threatening and glamorous role in the midfield battle. Left visibly furious by a number of decisions with his anger reciprocated by those in the stands at Hampden. By his own sky-high standards, one os his quieter and less influential performances for Scotland.

Kieron Bowie 3

A victim of circumstance to see his first Scotland start ended after 10 minutes as he was the unlucky one to be sacrificed after Hendry's red card. Looked bright in an early run down the right flank to create an opening in his only real involvement.

Oli McBurnie 5

You could see the frustration growing for the forward on a difficult night. Held the ball up well in moments and looked one of few capable of making something happen but was completely hamstrung by losing his strike partner so early. Desperate to get off the mark for Scotland but had no chance of doing so at Hampden tonight.

Stephen Welsh (for Bowie, 13) 5

Unfortunate not to start after impressing on debut against Slovenia. Called upon far sooner than expected but handled awkward circumstances well enough.

Ben Gannon-Doak (for Patterson, 59) 4

Drafted in at right wing-back as part of a triple change. Pinned back to defensive duties where he couldn't hurt Switzerland.

Robbie Ure (for McBurnie, 59) 3

Essentially completed a running drill with relentless pressing after replacing McBurnie as the sole striker. Limited in his touches of the ball as Scotland dropped deeper.

Ryan Christie (for Gilmour, 59) 4

Didn't close Amdouni down quickly enough for the third goal.

Josh Doig (for Robertson, 73) 2

On for his second cap in the closing period with the match already long decided.
