Scotland hooker Dave Cherry ruled out of Rugby World Cup after slipping on hotel stairs

Scotland hooker Dave Cherry has been ruled out of the Rugby World Cup due to concussion.

Cherry slipped and fell on the stairs at Scotland’s team hotel on Monday, and has now had to be replaced by Edinburgh’s Stuart McInally.

McInally joined the Scotland squad this morning, having been put on standby last week due to a concussion to Ewan Ashman.

Cherry would have missed at least the next 12 days due to concussion protocols, leaving Scotland making the tough call to replace him.

“I’m hugely disappointed to be leaving the squad with concussion, I’ve loved my time in camp over the summer and gaining my first world cup cap on Sunday against South Africa,” said Cherry.

“I want to wish the team all the best for the remainder of the competition.”

Ashman is expected to be available for selection for Scotland’s Pool B clash with Tonga in Nice on Sunday, September 24.

The Scots suffered a punishing 18-3 defeat by South Africa in Marseille on Sunday, in their World Cup opener.

Boss Gregor Townsend gave the players several days off in a bid to manage Scotland’s upcoming weekend without a World Cup match.
