New research has revealed the five most peaceful walks in the UK, and one in Scotland topped the list.
With the new year upon us, there is no better time to get out into nature and blow away the cobwebs of 2022. Experts at Go Outdoors have stressed the importance of spending time outdoors to improve mental health.
Stepping away from computer screens and hectic schedules, and venturing outside can help us feel revived and refreshed. It is also important for our physical health to exercise.
For those looking to escape the hustle and bustle, Go Outdoors has shared the most "mesmerising scenery at relaxing locations" across the UK. Among the destinations included are the Lake District, Cornwall, and the White Cliffs of Dover.
The only Scottish walk to appear on the list is the Fairy Pools on the Isle of Skye, which came in at number one. The famous pools bring visitors from around the globe, with some braving the cold water for some wild swimming.
Located at foot of the Black Cuillins near Glenbrittle, the Fairy Pools appear a vivid aqua blue. The habitat of the natural waterfall phenomenon is home to a diverse selection of animals, including red deer, ravens, and herons.
The journey from the car park near Glenbrittle to the Fairy Pools is approximately 1.5 miles, and takes around 40 minutes altogether. There is a bus that departs from the island's capital of Portree and takes visitors to the walk.
The origin of the pools' name is thought to derive from the many fairy legends on the Isle of Skye. Additionally, the bright and clear water is believed by locals to contain some magic within it.
In recent years, the number of tourists heading to the Fairy Pools for a dip in the water or a photograph has skyrocketed. Between 2015 and 2019, visitors reportedly doubled in number.
Go Outdoors said: "A truly tranquil location. Situated in Glen Brittle on the Isle of Skye, the Fairy Pools are a natural waterfall phenomenon, offering breath taking views combined with the peaceful sound of running water.
"This beautiful series of waterfalls run into crystal clear rock pools of mountain spring water, which some adventurers even swim in. However, these waters can get extremely cold, so it’s advised to take a wet suit and ensure all necessary safety precautions are followed if you are taking a dip in the pools."
