Hundreds of thousands of teachers and teaching staff are expected to take part in two days of strike action across England from today in a dispute over pay.
The National Education Union (NEU) has refused to suspend the mass walkouts despite desperate pleas from Education Secretary Gillian Keegan.
In an open letter to parents the minister said "the single best thing" the union can do is "sit down and talk" - though as yet she has made no guarantee an 'agreeable' offer would be made.
It means pupils face major disruption on Wednesday and Thursday with many schools forced to restrict access to certain year groups or fully close.

Ms Keegan said: "I will continue doing everything I can to end the disruption your family is facing as quickly as possible, particularly because I know exams for older pupils are coming up fast."
She first invited the NEU to formal talks on teachers' pay three weeks ago on the condition that the union's planned strikes were cancelled.
Mary Bousted, joint general secretary of the NEU, said the "responsibility for this lies squarely with the Education Secretary", adding: "The NEU has said time and again we will meet for talks."
She pointed to Wales and Scotland, where strike action was paused "when a serious offer was made", leading to consultation among members.
