Schoolgirl rushed to hospital after routine dentist appointment

A young girl who went to the dentist with pain was sent to Alder Hey hospital.

Millie Kelly from Newton-le-Willows, began to experience pain in her jaw and a lump in her mouth. When the swelling began to get worse, mum Nikki took her 11-year-old daughter to the dentist.

Assuming it was a tooth pushing through, an X-Ray soon showed it was something else and the schoolgirl was sent to Alder Hey hospital where tests showed she had a mass in her bone. Millie was soon diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of the bone.

Six months on and medication is helping, but Millie is still under the care of Alder Hey and needs a full body MRI to ensure it is not showing anywhere else. But young Millie wanted to give back to the hospital and other sick children.

So at 2am on Saturday morning, Millie and her mum and dad Mike walked up Snowdon, in the poor weather conditions and raised over £1,000 for the hospital.

Mum Nikki said: "It was only a small lump at first but then as time went on it was getting bigger and we thought surely it can't be her tooth. When she had the x-ray we realised it wasn't.

"We took her straight the dentist because it had just swollen up and we were worried it couldn't been an infection but it was this rare disease instead.

"We were back and forth to the hospital and she saw a lot of children and decided it would be a nice thing to help and give back because they were absolutely fantastic, they've been quick and really caring.

"So at 2am on Saturday morning we decided to go to see the sunrise but the weather changed which is typical for us and we ended up getting drenched and looked like we had swam in a lake. As soon as we got to the bottom the sun came out but she did really well and she powered through."
