Schoolgirl killed while playing in nan's home as 'stray bullet entered home and struck her'

An 11-year-old girl has been killed by a stray bullet inside her grandmother’s home while playing with a relative.

The shooting, which took place outside the house, happened at the home on Goulburn Avenue in the city of Detroit in the US state of Michigan at around 10.15pm on 4th June.

Saniyah Pugh, 11, was reportedly playing with a relative when the stray bullet entered the home and struck her.

The young girl’s grandmother Lawanda Melton said: “At this point there is no feeling. I’m numb, I'm broken. I mean there are no words - I’m speechless.”

Sandra Turner Handy, president of the Community Relations Council in the 9th Precinct, said: “It’s time for us to stop crying all the time with the chief about our babies being shot.

"11 years old, and she was doing nothing but having fun being a kid.”

As the investigation continues, police chief James White said two suspects are currently in custody.

He added: “The officers didn’t leave that investigation.

"They were able to work a number of leads, get a number of search warrants out, and we have one adult in custody and one juvenile in custody.

“Was the house targeted? What do we know?

"We have to be careful we are working an angle on this case that we’re pretty confident that is what happened, but we don’t want to compromise this investigation.

“Just be at a point where enough is enough, and we do everything we can to make sure this one is the last one.”

The victim’s grandmother launched a GoFundMe campaign to help with the funeral costs that have so far reached $11,000 (£9,000) of its $15,000 (£11,000) target.

Melton wrote: “Her mother Daejanay Pugh has to deal with the loss of her only child her daughter. Who loved to dance, play on TikTok, gymnastics, and cheerleading.”
