An investigation is underway into the circumstances that led to a school bus being swept off a flooded causeway in the Northern Territory's Top End on Tuesday.
Video of the incident posted on social media shows the bus partially submerged in the Finniss River at the Cheeney Road causeway near Batchelor, 110 kilometres south of Darwin by road.
The NT Education Department said three students from the Batchelor Area School were on board the vehicle, as well as the driver.
A department spokesperson said the group was able to exit the bus with the help of a passing motorist who came to their aid.
Another video shows water pouring out of the motorist's vehicle after crossing the flooded causeway.
A second bus was able to transport the group to school, the department said.
"No one was injured in the incident and the school is providing support to the students and their families," it said.
The Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics (DIPL), which contracts a private company to operate the bus service, said the water level was higher than the driver had anticipated.
"Safety is of the utmost importance and the department is working with the bus contractor to understand the circumstances that led to this incident," it said.
"(DIPL) will review the crossing to consider if any improvements are recommended."
It said the bus company, CDC, will take an alternative route in the meantime.
In a statement, NT Police said it was aware of the issue.
"Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident and are urging the community to remember — if it's flooded, forget it."
The Top End has been hit by severe weather over the past week, with the Victoria River communities of Daguragu, Pigeon Hole and Kalkarindji worst affected.
The Victoria Highway linking the NT to Western Australia is also closed at the Victoria River Bridge due to flooding.
Minor flooding is also continuing the McArthur River at Borroloola.
