On Tuesday, a devastating incident unfolded in Thailand as a school bus carrying nearly two dozen students and teachers caught fire during a field trip. The bus was en route from Uthai Thani province to Ayutthaya and Nonthaburi provinces when the fire broke out on the outskirts of Bangkok.
Witnesses described how the fire rapidly engulfed the bus, sending plumes of black smoke into the air. Authorities believe the explosion was triggered by a spark from a tire that ignited the gas cylinder powering the vehicle. Some students managed to escape through windows as the flames raged.
Rescue efforts by the Ruamkatanyu Foundation revealed that 23 passengers, including three teachers and 20 students, were missing and feared dead. However, two survivors were later found, bringing the total number of fatalities to 21. The students onboard were primarily from elementary and junior high school levels.
Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit confirmed that 16 students and three teachers were hospitalized for treatment, although their conditions remain uncertain. An investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra expressed her condolences to the victims' families, pledging government support for medical expenses and compensation. She emphasized the profound sadness felt as a mother herself, acknowledging the tragic loss experienced by the affected families.
