School board in Virginia fires superintendent in wake of classroom shooting

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Newport News School Board has voted to part ways with Superintendent George Parker III.

Members approved a separation agreement with Parker during a meeting Wednesday night. They named Michele Mitchell, executive director of student advancement, as interim superintendent.

The vote comes after a series of closed meeting discussions the board has held in the past two weeks.
