A meeting of the senior officials of various departments, chaired by District Collector A. Geetha, decided to coordinate various departments for the expansion of the Kerala Chicken project, being implemented under the Brahmagiri Development Society, in the district.

It decided to collect applications for the project at the grama panchayat level. The Kerala Bank has earmarked a loan of ₹51 crore for setting up 2,000 poultry farms in Wayanad, Malappuram, and Palakkad districts under the project.

The bank would provide ₹1.5 lakh each to set up 1,000 poultry farms, each with 1,000 chickens, at an interest rate of 7.5%. A loan of ₹3 lakh would be provided to set up 700 poultry farms, each with 2,000 chickens at an interest rate of 7% and ₹5 lakh to set up 300 farms each with 3,000 chickens with 8.5% interest rate.

An incentive of 3%, up to the loan of ₹3 lakh, would be provided to the poultry farmers who repay the debt on time under the Kisan credit card scheme.

The meeting also decided to submit a proposal to the District Planning Committee for its permission to set up poultry farms by utilizing the services of the workers under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme and provide subsidies to deserving poultry farmers.
