Scarlets v Dragons and Cardiff Rugby match cancelled as every Welsh grassroots game could be off after Queen's death

The Welsh regions have cancelled their final pre-season fixtures following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Cardiff boss Dai Young was due to get one last look at his side before the United Rugby Championship season starts next weekend with Italian side Zebre in the Welsh capital.

Meanwhile, the Dragons were due to travel down the M4 for a derby against the Scarlets but that will no longer take place.

All three teams have had one pre-season fixture each and head into competitive action with the first round of the league kicking off a week today.

Cardiff's next match will see them welcome a formidable Munster side to the Arms Park, the Scarlets face a Welsh derby against the Ospreys, who have had two pre-season matches having gone a week earlier than the rest in their preparations, while the Dragons travel to Edinburgh.

In a statement, Cardiff confirmed their game against the Italians would not go ahead, adding: "At this sad time, the thoughts and condolences of all at Cardiff Rugby are with the Royal Family, as we share in the nation’s collective grief."

The Dragons said: "As a mark of respect, and to acknowledge the sad passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, tonight's pre-season friendly with Scarlets has been cancelled."

The Scarlets added: "Our thoughts at the Scarlets are with the Royal Family at this sad time."

Meanwhile, there is a meeting taking place within the Welsh Rugby Union this morning to decide what happens with the grassroots fixtures this weekend. Last night's Premiership match between Aberavon and Swansea went ahead after a last-minute decision but a different call may be made on games due to take place over the weekend.

Confirmation one way or the other on those games is expected swiftly.
