Scam warning over Lego giveaway that 'looks too good to be true'

Fraudsters running a Lego scam which is "too good to be true" are actually trying to steal bank details.

Consumer rights website Which? have issued the warning of a giveaway scam which is being circulated on social media. The dodgy Facebook post states it is offering a Han Solo’s Millennium Falcon set, which usually costs £734.99 for just £3.

The post then asks for the person to click on a link to "order now". After this, a page containing fake Lego branding and a URL which isn't part of the company will pop up.

This webpage will then ask three questions to confirm the person is "real". A mini game will then have to be played the person must "choose the right gift box" to win.

However, instead of the Lego set, the page said a person can win a "Samsonite suitcase", according to Which?. After this, the page will ask for the person to fill out a form to claim the Lego within a set period of time, including bank details to pay the £3 and therefore allowing the scammers to steal cash.

A Lego spokesperson told Which?: "We have been made aware of a fraudulent site claiming to sell Lego products at a discounted price to obtain customers’ personal details. We take this extremely seriously and are currently investigating the issue.

"In the meantime, we recommend consumers be vigilant when making online purchases."

The consumer rights website said there are key signs with the Facebook post which indicates it is a scam. This includes it being "too good to be true" as it is offering an item worth hundreds of pounds for just £3, few followers but many comments, a dodgy URL, asking the person to enter a competition and a time limit.
