Saudi Masam Cleared 4,615 Houthi Mines in January

MASAM Program Manager Osama al-Gosaibi (MASAM media center)

The Saudi Project for Landmine Clearance in Yemen (MASAM) announced that it removed 4,615 Houthi mines, unexploded ordnance, and other explosive devices in January.

MASAM stated that the total mines, explosive devices, and ammunition removed during the past month were 536 anti-tank mines, 49 anti-personnel mines, 4023 unexploded ordnance, and seven explosive devices, while the total cleared area of land reached 968,147 square meters.

Since its launch, MASAM removed 384,220 mines, unexploded ordnance, and an explosive device randomly planted by the Houthi militia in various Yemeni governorates, while the total cleared area has reached 43,612,168 square meters.

In January, the Project destroyed and detonated 1,632 mines, unexploded ordnance, and explosive devices. During the operation, 279 anti-tank mines, 131 anti-personnel mines, 88 explosive devices, and 1,134 unexploded ordnance were destroyed.

In January, the Saudi Project participated in an open photo exhibition in Marib to highlight the Houthi crimes against civilians in Yemen.

The exhibition included 400 photos detailing the heinous violations and humanitarian crimes against civilians.

MASAM Program Manager Osama al-Gosaibi stressed that the main goal is to clear schools from any mines, noting that the Program asserts the right of the Yemeni people to live a safe life, adding that it can only be completed if education is a secure environment.

Gosaibi confirmed that safety of Yemeni schools is essential, noting that halting education would be devastating for the coming generations and a fertile environment for spreading ignorance and illiteracy.
