Saudi fined for obscene act

A Saudi Arabian tourist has been detained and fined for committing an act of public indecency in Phuket.

The incident, which happened on Patong's Soi Paradise, was widely shared on social media after locals reported two intoxicated foreign men engaging in obscene behaviour on the roadside, ignoring repeated requests to return to their hotel.

Local authorities charged one of the men, identified as Alharbbi. He admitted to the offence and was fined 5,000 baht. No details were made available for the other man.

Mr Alharbbi entered Thailand on Dec 27 on a tourist visa valid until Feb 24.

Immigration officials determined his actions violated Thai cultural norms and public morality, causing serious damage to the country's image.

His visa was revoked.

He was taken to the Phuket Immigration Detention Centre and will be deported.
