Saturday's International Holocaust Remembrance recognized in Frankfort

Both chambers of the Kentucky General Assembly adopted resolutions Friday recognizing January 27th as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. In the Senate, the resolution was sponsored by Lawrenceburg Senator Adrienne Southworth. She spoke about a promise of freedom video at the holocaust museum in Jerusalem. Southworth said prisoners were told they were being released outside, only to be lined up and shot.

“How in the world do you get from a free society to target practice? These were human lives, just downed one-two-three. Just down-down-down. All for no reason,” said Southworth.

Louisville Senator Karen Berg told her colleagues holocaust history demonstrates what human beings are capable of doing. She said there’s another side of history where human beings are capable of loving, caring, upholding, and enriching. Berg said people make those choices as society goes along.

“The history of human behavior and how good we can be and how bad we can be is a shared history that we all need to remember honestly in every action,” said Berg.

During her emotional remarks, Smithfield Senator Lindsey Tichenor recalled how President Eisenhower after World War II said get it all on record.. films, and witnesses…because someone will one day say this never happened.
