Water restrictions for Scotland as rivers reach crisis low levels
Water must be treated as a “precious commodity”, climate experts have warned as fears grow of regular droughts in Scotland.
Hosepipe bans will become the norm, industries including whisky and farming will suffer and water metering for all households is on the cards as the effects of global warming hit home. The warnings came as a satellite image showed how dry conditions have left the east side parched while watchdogs imposed the first water ban caused by this summer’s drought.
Environment body SEPA insisted the emergency measures were forced on them by some of the driest conditions in 80 years in the east of once soggy Scotland. Professor Lindsay Beevers, of Edinburgh University, said Scots should prepare for major restrictions in the years to come.
Heartless Scots fraudster conned terminally ill pal out of £476k
A heartless fraudster who conned a terminally ill pal out of almost £500,000 has been given one month to repay the victim’s family or face 19 months in jail.
Keith Cameron, described as a “Walter Mitty character”, was caged back in 2015 for swindling his friend and neighbour Jonathan Speirs.
The 61-year-old was slapped with a proceeds of crime order for £211,000 with the money to be returned to the Speirs family.
Drugs gang who trafficked cocaine and heroin into Scotland jailed for 187 years
A gang who trafficked drugs from Liverpool to Scotland have been jailed for more than 187 years.
The men were sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court after their multi-million pound scheme supplying drugs to Glasgow, Dundee and various locations across the UK was uncovered by police.
The court heard the thugs were also involved in dealing cocaine, heroin, ketamine and other drugs, while two of the gang’s ringleaders made attempts to get hold of weapons in the months before they were brought to justice.
Thunderstorms to hit Scotland tomorrow morning as Met Office brings weather warning forward
Thunderstorms are set to hit Scotland tomorrow morning after the Met Office brought forward a yellow warning.
The country has been placed under two thunderstorm warnings for Sunday and Monday following the heatwave that has taken over much of this week. The hot spell will give way to storms, with the yellow warning initially issued for noon tomorrow.
However, the Met Office has now updated Scots to say the weather is now expected to turn at 9am. The yellow warning will extend to further areas and end at 11:59pm. A second warning is now in place from midnight until 11:59pm on Monday night.
Two Scots nurseries shut amid E Coli outbreak as children taken to hospital
Two Scots nurseries have been closed following an outbreak of E Coli which has left a number of children in hospital.
Church Road Pear Tree Nursery in Haddington, East Lothian, has been shut while health authorities carry out an investigation. In total 28 cases have been identified - with most said to be mild. However, some are in hospital in a stable condition.
Another nursery in the town, Meadowpark Pear Tree, has also been closed as a precaution after people connected with it reported symptoms. NHS Lothian says a specific source has not yet been identified but advanced microbiological testing is under way to identify the strain of the infection and any links.
