Sarah Pidgeon Wore a Lavender Chanel Gown Inspired by CBK at the Emmys

Sarah Pidgeon brought a subtle reference to Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy to the 2026 Emmy Awards, where she arrived in a custom lavender Chanel gown inspired by the '90s slip-dress silhouettes associated with the woman she portrayed in Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette. Pidgeon was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her performance as Bessette-Kennedy.

The look offered a direct fashion connection to the character without reproducing a specific Bessette-Kennedy outfit. According to Harper's Bazaar, Pidgeon worked with Chanel on a custom gown that referenced the '90s slip dress, a style for which Bessette-Kennedy became known.

A Modern Take on the '90s Slip Dress

The Chanel gown was cut on the bias and crafted from shiny silk. Harper's Bazaar reported that it featured a low cowl back and a drop-waist skirt that extended into a train across the blue carpet. Vogue described the design as an asymmetric bias-cut gown with a plunging neckline and pearl embellishments.

Color was another significant departure from the neutral palette often associated with Bessette-Kennedy. Pidgeon wore the dress in a lilac shade, giving the familiar slip-dress shape a distinctly different finish.

Vogue reported that Pidgeon was drawn to the gown's color and said Chanel conducted three dye tests to achieve the right shade. In comments to the publication, Pidgeon described the finished dress as both celebratory and comfortable.

The gown also incorporated pearl and chain details. Harper's Bazaar credited Matthieu Blazy with adding strings of pearls to the design, while People described the finished dress as a lilac satin slip gown embellished with gold and silver crystal chains, gold beads, and white and lilac pearls.

Chanel Jewelry Completed the Look

Pidgeon continued the Chanel connection through her accessories. Harper's Bazaar reported that stylist Emma Jade Morrison paired the gown with Chanel pieces, including a diamond necklace and chameleon flower-shaped rings. Vogue likewise reported that Pidgeon wore Chanel High Jewelry, including diamond necklaces and chameleon flower-shaped rings.

The Emmy appearance also continued Pidgeon's association with Chanel during the Love Story press cycle. Vogue noted that she had previously worn the French fashion house for the series' New York City premiere earlier in the year.

Pidgeon's connection to Bessette-Kennedy extends beyond the wardrobe references. In her interview with Vogue, the actress said that portraying Bessette-Kennedy had left a lasting impression on her, particularly the character's sensibilities, opinions, and passions. She also described the choice to incorporate that connection into her Emmy-night look.

A Fashion Reference to the Role

The timing made the Chanel look particularly relevant. Pidgeon was among the five nominees for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, alongside Claire Danes, Sally Field, Carey Mulligan, and Sarah Snook. The Television Academy lists Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette as a six-time 2026 Emmy nominee, including nominations for Pidgeon's performance, Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, Outstanding Period Costumes, and Outstanding Casting.

The series ultimately won the Emmy for Outstanding Casting for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, according to the Television Academy.

For Pidgeon, the lavender Chanel gown provided a clear fashion reference to the character at the center of her Emmy nomination. Its slip-dress silhouette connected the look to Bessette-Kennedy's recognizable '90s wardrobe, while the lilac color, silk construction, pearls, and Chanel High Jewelry established the gown as its own contemporary red-carpet look.
