Sarah Michelle Gellar has revealed she has Covid-19 and opened up about the struggles of coping with the virus as someone with asthma and lung issues.
The Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress announced the news to her four million Instagram followers via a lengthy statement on Monday evening.
Sarah explained why she had not been on her social media account recently but did not say whether her husband, fellow actor Freddie Prinze Jr, or their two children, who also have asthma, have or have had coronavirus.
The 45-year-old admitted it has been "tough" but is thankful that she is vaccinated and boosted. However despite her vaccination status, she said it has "certainly not been an easy road".
She wrote: "I realise that I have been really quiet on here. After two and half years, Covid finally got me.
"Thankfully I'm vaccinated and boosted. But to those out there that say 'it's just a cold'...maybe for some lucky people it is.
"But for this (relatively) young fit person who has struggled with asthma and lung issues her entire life, that is not my experience."
She concluded: "Even with the therapeutics and all my protocols it's been tough. I know I'm on the road to recovery, but it's certainly not been an easy road.
"I'll be back soon (hopefully with super antibodies...even if just for a bit). To quote a friend of mine - 'I would rather wear a mask in the shower if it means I don't get this again."
Gellar shot to stardom in 1997 as the main character in hit supernatural series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran for seven seasons until 2003.
Buffy fought against a host of evil nasties, including vampires, demons and other forces of darkness in the teen drama which had 144 episodes and also led to the spin-off show Angel due to it's popularity.
The series brought Gellar to the attention of movie bosses and catapulted her career to the next level with parts in Cruel Intentions, Scream 2 and I Know What You Did Last Summer, where she met her future husband.
They married in 2002 and have two children, Charlotte, 12 and Rocky aged nine.
The acting couple have worked together many times, including playing love interests Fred and Daphne in the two Scooby-Doo movies.
