Egyptian television presenter Sarah Khalifa has been sentenced to death by hanging after being convicted in a drugs case involving more than 750kg of narcotics and drug‑manufacturing materials.

The 39‑year‑old, once known for fronting a television programme focused on crime and security, was among 12 defendants handed the death penalty by a Cairo criminal court, a sharp reversal for a media figure who built her public career around reporting on crime.
