Santiago Munoz watch: A standing ovation, Gallowgate goal and running battle with defenders

Newcastle United's Mexican Under-23 international Santiago Munoz had waited a long time to experience his big moment in a black and white shirt. Five long months had passed since he was announced as an 18-month loan signing from Santos Laguna.

But after overcoming a hamstring injury and building up to his St James' Park debut he arrived in style with a goal on his full bow in front of the Gallowgate End. True, it may have been a deserted Gallowgate End and in front of just 793 hearty souls, but it meant the world to the 19-year-old.

Here's how the teenager's night unfolded in the dramatic 4-3 win over West Brom.

4 mins - West Brom's uncompromising teenage centre-back Caleb Taylor, son of bruising former Birmingham defender Martin, tries to lay down the law but Munoz cleverly wins a free-kick and sends the message that he will be no pushover.

10 mins - Munoz intelligently gets past Taylor and heads for the penalty area but is halted by a clothesline move by the 6ft 3in centre-back to stop him in his tracks.

18 mins - Munoz looks to have shielded the ball successfully from former West Ham youth player Toby King but ends up conceding a foul as he battles back

26 mins - The running battle with the West Brom defensive rearguard continues as he peels off to the right and makes a good run but Tom Fellows just gets back with him and nicks possession back for the visitors.

34 mins - Munoz makes a really clever run to the edge of the box evading West Brom defenders. He shows up in exactly the right place but does not receive a pass from a team-mate and the ball eventually goes out for a corner.

45 mins- The half-time whistle sounds after a tough first half with Newcastle 2-0 down despite having more openings.

46 mins - Munoz emerges for the second half with his team-mates.

48 mins - Munoz holds up the ball well and helps produce an attack that puts West Brom on edge.

51 mins - Joe Oliver's right-wing cross is met by Munoz who heads past the goalkeeper to grab his first goal for Newcastle. He rushes to the net to retrieve it as he looks to get back on with the game at 2-1.

56 mins - Newcastle are on top now and Dylan Stephenson's right wing cross is clipped in for Munoz. The Mexican youth international takes the shot on first time but it's just over the top. Confidence is brimming for the lad now.

64 mins - With coach Elliott Dickman well aware that Munoz has played just over 100 minutes of action in five months he makes the prudent call to replace him. Munoz leaves the field to a standing ovation from the crowd in the East Stand and those on executive level.

Munoz's next appearance could come on Friday night away to Middlesbrough as the Under-23s look to cement their play-off place in Premier League 2.
