Sanitary worker demanding permanent job tries to immolate self

NAGPUR: A man tried to immolate self by pouring petrol on himself outside the district collectorate on Thursday morning to draw attention towards his demand for permanent job as a sanitary worker.

An alert police personnel prevented the man from setting himself on fire. On being informed, a team of Sadar police station led by senior PI Vinod Chowdhary rushed to the spot and detained the man, identified as Vinod Mehroliya (52, a resident of Yerkheda, Kamptee).

Police said Mehroliya has been working as a temporary sanitary worker at the food and civil supplies office in Teka Naka since 1981. He works for two hours daily and is paid Rs1,200 per month, said police.

It is learnt, for the last many years Mehroliya has been demanding he be made permanent, but in vain.

Sadar police are probing further.
