A San Diego police officer lost his life in a devastating incident when a fleeing vehicle collided with his patrol car on Monday night. Officer Austin Machitar, 30, who had been serving with the department since 2019, tragically passed away in the crash. His partner that night, Officer Zach Martinez, 27, sustained critical injuries and is currently in critical but stable condition at a local hospital.
The driver of the speeding vehicle, whose identity has not been disclosed, also lost their life in the collision. Officer Machitar was a dedicated member of the force, fulfilling roles in patrol duties, field training, and recruitment efforts for new officers through videos and photoshoots.
Mayor Todd Gloria expressed his condolences, hailing Machitar as a hero for his outstanding service to the city. Martinez, who had been under Machitar's mentorship, has been with the department for 1 1/2 years.
According to initial reports from the police, an officer initiated a pursuit of the speeding vehicle, which was later called off by a supervisor. Machitar and Martinez were en route to respond to the situation when the tragic collision occurred, resulting in the loss of Machitar's life and Martinez's critical injuries.
The California Highway Patrol is currently conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Our thoughts are with the families of the officers and the driver during this difficult time.
