Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 6 set to launch next week with slimmer, larger displays

Samsung is set to launch a new take on its Galaxy Z Fold 6 foldable phone, the original version of which was announced only in July 2024.

The phone reportedly trims down its thickness from 12.1 millimetres to 10.6mm, getting closer to — while still not matching — the rival Honor Magic V3. That phone is only 9.3mm thick when closed.

Both displays are expected to get a bump in size too, from 6.3 inches to 6.5 inches for the outer display. And from 7.6 inches to 8 inches for the inner one.

The phone will be launched on October 25, according to the Korean publication Financial News. But those who recently bought a Galaxy Z Fold 6 shouldn’t feel upset because the phone’s “Special Edition” may not come to the UK.

It may make it to only the Korean and Chinese markets. For most of us in the UK, it’s instead an indication of where this series is headed next.

Despite what the Galaxy Z Fold 6 spec sheet says, Samsung does care about phone thickness, particularly when being shown up by its arch-rivals.

It makes sense for Samsung’s home turf of South Korea to get this new model. But why China? Foldables are highly popular in the country and the market research firm IDC says they may account for as much as 42 per cent of global sales in 2024.

Phone leaker Evan Blass recently posted rendered images of the phone, showing off its more rectangular-shaped camera housing and dotted texture to the sidewall.

Another leaker, Ice Universe, also claims Samsung has improved the display crease, making it less apparent. While foldable phones are robust enough for long-term daily use, if you’re careful, the marking where the inner display folds becomes more pronounced over months of use.

Samsung typically announces its foldable each year in July. Short of a surprise wider release of this phone, which may be called the Galaxy Z Fold SE, we in the UK have a while to wait to get hold of this next-gen foldable tech.
