Sam Smith fans were left furious after a journalist on the Grammy Awards red carpet misgendered the singer.
The star-studded ceremony in LA saw talents from the music industry come together to celebrate – including the Stay With Me hitmaker.
Sam, who uses they/them pronouns, arrived in style with their Unholy co-star Kim Petras, along with Gottmik and Violet Chachki from RuPaul’s Drag Race, writes The Mirror.
After their show stopping entrance, one reporter said: "Sam Smith has had a lot of controversy around his outfits this past year, I love that he’s continuing to push the mould.
"Love that he’s continuing to break out from the Sam Smith that we knew at the ballads.
"He’s still singing those ballads, but he’s definitely diving fully in, into pop music, and we can see that, not only in his music, but also in his looks as well."
However, when fans noticed the misgendering, they hit out online, saying: "Everyone using the wrong pronouns for Sam Smith is bothering me."
Another added: "Someone tell the reporters to use the right pronouns for Sam Smith !!!!"
In 2019, Sam revealed they were non-binary and gender queer. During an interview earlier this year, they explained changing their pronouns "felt like coming home".
Sam told Zane Low: "Since changing my pronouns, it felt like a coming home. I wish I knew what the words were when I was in school, because I would’ve identified as that in school. Because it is who I am and it’s who I’ve always been."
This comes after Sam released the new music video for the track I'm Not Here To Make Friends, but it sparked furious debate online.
Some complained that the video was "hyper-sexualised", but others have argued that the Gloria hitmaker is simply being authentic and finally fully embracing their sexuality.
Many have called for the video, which features Sam dancing in a corset and suspenders with nipple covers, to be age restricted on video platforms such as YouTube as they claim it "normalises pornography".
However, Sam's fans have insisted that the video is "empowering".
