Sam Smith corrects Alex Jones after BBC One Show misgendering blunder

Sam Smith had to correct Alex Jones after a blunder on the BBC One Show. Sam, who identifies as non-binary since 2019, appeared on the hit show, hosted by Alex and Ronan Keating.

The hit singer, known for 'Unholy', 'Stay With Me' and 'Like I Can', has asked people to use the they/them pronouns when being referred to. The Daily Record reports Sam discussed their secret hobby.

Sam said they would like to become a "fisher-them" in an appearance on the BBC One show in December. However, the chart-topper had to correct Alex as she asked whether they would like to be a "fly fisherman", reports the Mirror.

Fellow One Show host Ronan asked Sam: "You're a big fan of fishing?" The singer replied: "I do love fishing, yes! Yeah, I'd love to be a fisher-them."

Alex asked them: "What, like a fly fisherman?" Before Sam swiftly corrected her by saying: "I'd be any type of fisher-them. I think I would like to, one day, I'd just like to end my days fishing. Like sitting on a bank."

They added: "I do it on the sea and I do it on lakes. I've never done it alone, someone's almost taught me." This comes after Sam caused a stir at the Brit Awards after their performance of Unholy alongside Kim Petras, and their red carpet outfit which went viral on social media. The duo performed their chart-topping single live at London's 02 which amassed more than 100 Ofcom complaints.

A spokesperson for Ofcom told MailOnline: "We received 106 complaints about the BRIT Awards on ITV1 on February 11. The majority of complaints related to Sam Smith's performance, with the remainder about the use of offensive language and consumption of alcohol."

Sam had already made headlines earlier in the night as they donned their artistic inflatable latex sculptural red carpet look which dominated headlines. This comes just one week after Sam was slammed for their Grammy performance of the same song. They were accused of a "satanic" performance as the set took on a devil theme, with Sam and Kim dressed in red outfits.
