Sam Johnstone released by West Brom amid Manchester United return speculation

West Bromwich Albion have announced that Sam Johnstone has been released by the club.

Johnstone, who began his career at Manchester United, made 167 appearances for the West Midlands club having joined in 2018 from Old Trafford. In a statement, the Baggies said: "Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone will depart having spent four years at the club, making 167 appearances since his arrival in July 2018.

"The club would like to thank all departing players for their efforts during their time at The Hawthorns and we wish them every success in the future." West Brom then tweeted their appreciation for Johnstone saying: "167 appearances, 44 clean sheets, thank you for your efforts during your time at the Hawthorns."

According to reports in The Sun, Johnstone is a target for several Premier League clubs, including United and Tottenham. West Ham attempted to sign the Englishman for £10m last summer but the bid was rejected.

United will most likely be looking for a keeper in the summer with Dean Henderson closing in on a move to Newcastle. MEN Sport reported last week that a move to the north east club was progressing with it not yet clear if Henderson would leave on loan or permanently.
