There was great excitement for Newcastle fans at St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon when Sam Fender appeared on the pitch as a special guest, with a Local Hero treat for the Geordie faithful.
After a boatload of speculation, the North Shields singer announced a huge gig at Newcastle United’s ground on Friday morning, with scores of fans immediately putting in June 9th 2023 firmly in their diaries as social media went wild. Sam described the concert as “a childhood dream come true” as he announced the historic show in true Geordie style, to the strains of Marc Knofpler anthem Local Hero.
And it was that song that gave the 51,000 SJP crowd a goosebump-inducing moment to remember.

After Sam and his band walked into the turf, a reminder to everyone on how to get tickets for his gig was given before personalized flags were held aloft in his honour and saxophone player Johnny Bluehat started playing Local Hero.
Pre-sale tickets for Sam’s gig go on sale on Wednesday, with general sale next Friday.
