Sam Fender's Glastonbury setlist as fans argue he should have been Friday headliner

As far as Glastonbury debuts go, Sam Fender couldn't have hoped for a better one as he and his band owned the Pyramid Stage and fans argued they should have headlined.

After being forced to miss the festival three years ago due to illness, Sam and his band had another career defining moment at Worthy Farm, when they were the penultimate act of the main stage bill for Friday. A huge crowd gathered in the flesh and in front of their TVs back at home as Sam and the lads arrived on stage at 8.15pm, to kick things off with singalong anthem Will We Talk.

Social media went into overdrive as those watching the BBC's Glastonbury live coverage heaped praise on Sam, with standout moments from his performance including instant classic Seventeen Going Under, spine-tinging ode to Newcastle, The Dying Light and the fact that Sam sipped from a bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale mid-set.

Sam got the crowd at fever pitch in time for the arrival of Friday headliner Billie Eilish, but, watching her set shortly after, plenty of people watching at home, said Sam should definitely have been top of the bill. One tweeted: "Enjoying @billieeilish set of tik tok tunes but can't help thinking a full set by @samfendermusic would've been a better headliner."

In full agreement, another posted: "He should have been the headliner totally blown everyone out of the water." Many others online felt the same and said, while he didn't get to headline on Friday, surely it's honour that will be bestowed on Sam in the future.
