It was the job of Rolling Stones rocker Ronnie Wood to present Sam with his award as the 27-year-old and his bandmates looked delighted at their victory.
Giving his acceptance speech, Sam said: "I'm going to completely screw this whole thing up. I had a plan and I forgot it, so I'm just going to say thanks to the fans, 'cos it was fan voted. You guys are the best."
He continued: "Thank you to Owain, my manager. Thanks for walking into that pub 10 years ago and believing in it. Thanks to the team. Thanks to everyone back in Shields."
Sam was spotted performing at his favourite boozer Low Lights Tavern by Ben Howard's manager Owain who took him on and changed his live forever.
Sam's Brit win was met with great excitement on Twitter.
One fan reacted: "sam fender got himself the win for his local," with another posting: "Buzzing for Sam fender he deserved a Brit tonight!"
A third posted: "King of the North. Sam Fender wins a #BRIT "
