Sam Darnold sets record vs. 49ers

After the San Francisco 49ers came up short on fourth down at the goal line, the Minnesota Vikings took over at the 3-yard line in the second quarter. Despite being pushed back against their own end zone, Sam Darnold kept his eyes downfield for his star pass catcher.

Darnold was able to step up and fire a bomb to Justin Jefferson as he slipped behind J’Ayir Brown and George Odum deep downfield. Once Darnold laced the perfect pass, Jefferson did the rest. Jefferson weaved past 49ers defenders for the improbable 97-yard score.

Behind Darnold’s deep shot to Jefferson gave the Vikings a commanding 10-0 lead over the 49ers in the second quarter.

Now, the pass from Darnold to Jefferson will live in the 49ers record books. According to Josh Dubow of the Associated Press, Darnold’s 97-yard pass to Jefferson is the longest-ever touchdown pass allowed by the 49ers.
