It took seven seasons and stops in four different NFL cities, but Sam Darnold is performing like one of the top quarterbacks in the league. He will hit free agency this coming off-season, and he could be in store for a big pay day.
Failures and shortcomings defined Darnold’s early career. Originally drafted 3rd overall by the Jets in 2018, he went 13-25 as the starter in New York, and was eventually traded to Carolina. It looked as though he was destined for a career as a backup, which started when he played behind Brock Purdy in San Francisco last season.
Sam Darnold Might Be The Best Free Agent QB In 2025
More backup duty was predicted when he signed a one-year deal with the Vikings this past off-season. But a pre-season injury to rookie JJ McCarthy elevated Darnold into the starting spot for 2024, and it has worked out far better than expected for both sides.
There weren’t any high expectations for Darnold and the Vikings this season. It was projected to be a transition year for Minnesota after losing quarterback Kirk Cousins to free agency. But they’ve become one of the surprise teams in the league, getting out to an 11-2 start and nipping at the heels of the mighty Detroit Lions in the NFC North.
It’s becoming clear in league circles that Sam Darnold will command a high price this offseason and could be out of the #Vikings’ budget.

The play of Sam Darnold has been one of the biggest reasons for the team’s success. He has 28 touchdowns through Week 14, tied for the most in the league, and has a passer rating that ranks in the top-10. He had his best and most productive game of the year on Sunday against the Falcons, throwing 5 touchdowns and no interceptions and a season-high 347 yards.
His stay in Minnesota might be a short one. The one-year deal makes Darnold a free agent at the end of the current season, and he may have priced himself out of the Vikings’ plans. When looking at the projected free agent quarterbacks for 2025, he may be one of the most attractive names. Jameis Winston might be the only other starter-level pass-thrower that will be available, but is three years older than Darnold and has a far greater turnover tendency.
The possibility of Sam Darnold returning to the Vikings all depends on how they feel about McCarthy. It appeared as though they were ready to ride with the rookie QB this year, and they may view him highly enough to let Darnold walk. And if the free agent commands a hefty pay day on the open market, there may be no choice.
