Sam Austin has explained that despite scoring two goals in Notts County's FA Cup defeat to Coalville Town at the weekend, he needs to continue to perform in training to obtain a starting spot this Friday evening.
In what was a disappointing afternoon for the Magpies at Meadow Lane at the weekend, the 26-year-old was one of few positives, scoring twice to give manager Luke Williams food for thought ahead of a return to National League action on Friday night against Maidstone.
Since joining the club in the summer transfer window from Kidderminster Harriers, Austin has started just three games for Notts and often used as an impact substitution, something that has been used to great effect over the season with Williams looking to maintain the energy of his high press late on into games.

Arguably his most impressive performance came in the Magpies' 2-2 draw with Chesterfield, instantly involved in both of Macaulay Langstaff's goals to come from two goals down.
But following his performance on Saturday, Austin explained that despite scoring his first two competitive goals for the club, he will continue to perform at the highest level to get that place in the starting line-up.
"I don't think it was just about the two goals, it's about how you have been performing throughout the weeks leading up to up games.
"I just have to keep doing my best when I do get that game time and hopefully, I will get that shirt."
In what was a promising start to his Notts career, the midfielder suffered with an untimely toe injury that kept him out of the Magpies' fixtures against Aldershot and Dorking Wanderers, halting his momentum after the first seven games of the season.
But having featured from the bench in the National League and getting his first start since Notts' 4-1 win over Halifax Town in August, Austin insisted he is back to his best after returning from injury and will be ready for when his manager calls on him.
"I think especially with the little niggle I had with my toe, I think that set me back a little bit and I needed to regain that momentum again and I feel like I am back to full fitness and ready to go.
"If the gaffer calls upon me, I'll be ready."
