Former England boss Sam Allardyce has admitting he would have made the move to the Scottish Premiership to join Celtic or Rangers – if the timing had been right.
The veteran manager has been out of work since leaving West Brom in 2021 having spent the majority of his career in English football, but the former Bolton, Newcastle United and West Ham boss admits he expected a call to come from north of the border at some point. With Michael Beale in the midst of a Rangers rebuild and Ange Postecoglou surging towards another league title it appears unlikely a move will be on the cards for the 68-year-old, who became known as a specialist at avoiding relegation from the English Premier League.
Allardyce appeared on the No Tippy Tappy Football Podcast and during a discussion about the Viaplay Cup Final between the Glasgow rivals he stated he would have made the move to either Ibrox or Celtic Park if the call had come. He confessed he was surprised a link had not been made before due to having Scottish parents.
He said: “With Scottish parents you’d think that at some stage someone would have pointed that out for me. I think at the right time I would have gone, yes.
"Because of the size of the clubs and the size of the fans and the fact that you’re winning all of the time. I went to West Ham in the Championship for a different challenge and we only lost eight games that season, what a pleasure that was, only eight miserable weekends. The rest is glorious.
“You go to Rangers or Celtic and what you have to instil and I’ve listened to this off of Alex (Ferguson) and Jose (Mourinho) , you need to find what to do as a manager to get your players to keep winning because keeping winning is so much harder than keeping losing. You can’t keep winning because they switch off.”
